Summer 2024 Newsletter

The First BHC Family Beach Day

This summer, BHC organized a family outing to Leo Carrillo State Beach, which was made possible through the California State Parks’ Outdoor Equity Grant. The purpose of the grant is to increase the ability of residents in underserved communities to participate in outdoor experiences within their community, state parks, and other public lands.

BHC provided transportation and food for 40 BHC residents to enjoy a day of outdoor activities and community building. Together with a Malibu State Parks ranger, our group took a nature walk to learn more about the many features of this state beach, such as tidepools and sea caves. We hope to plan more outings like this to get our families outdoors!

The Grand Opening of Las Casitas

Through the support of community partners, Burbank Housing Corporation (BHC) celebrated the completion of its latest affordable housing project, Las Casitas. Located on two existing BHC properties on Niagara St. and Linden Ave., Las Casitas adds four additional units to our affordable housing portfolio. BHC dedicated Las Casitas de Niagara to the current Burbank City Council for their continued support of our projects and Las Casitas de Linden to our dedicated board of directors for their unwavering efforts.

This project received crucial funding from the Burbank Housing Authority, Enterprise Bank, and the Los Angeles County Development Authority. The grand opening also commemorates our first all-electrical project that features electrical appliances and solar panels, which was made possible thanks to a partnership with Burbank Water & Power and the Mother Joseph Foundation. Las Casitas will offer energy-efficient units that provide utility cost-savings for the residents.

During our grand opening, BHC paid a special tribute to Marcos Gonzalez, a beloved member of our community and a dear friend. We were joined by his family, who unveiled a special plaque and fountain in his honor. Marcos worked with the BHC team for 18 years on all of our development projects. This heartfelt tribute symbolizes his remarkable legacy and the profound impact he had on us all.

At the grand opening of Las Casitas de Niagara, we took the opportunity to showcase the hard work and dedication put into our second project, located at Linden Ave. This was achieved through an engaging video tour that highlighted the property's features and amenities, giving attendees a comprehensive view of what Linden has to offer. Check out the video above to view the completed Casitas de Linden!

BHC & HALA Community Resource Fair

On May 18th, Burbank Housing Corporation and Home Again Los Angeles (HALA) teamed up to share valuable resources with our resident community. Exhibitors from the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank, KinderCare Learning Centers, International Institute of Los Angeles, Gain Federal Credit Union, Burbank Parks & Rec, Burbank Public Library, City of Burbank’s Golden State Community Planning team, New York Life, and Kids’ Community Dental Clinic.

A special thank you to the Burbank Realtors Community Service Foundation for donating special bags filled with summer supplies and MAEVE Burbank for donating sunscreen and nutritious snacks for young children.

Congratulations to our 2024 Scholarship Winners!

Every year since 2006, BHC has awarded scholarships to residents pursuing higher education. We offer scholarships to college-bound youth through the Allen Cottriel Scholarship and non-traditional adult students through the “Never Too Late” Scholarship. These two scholarships give opportunities to BHC residents who lack the financial resources to obtain a degree, professional certificate, or vocational training.

We are thrilled to announce this year's scholarship recipients, who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and perseverance in their educational pursuits:

Sarah Koussa, 2024 recipient of the Allen Cottriel Scholarship, who is pursuing a Masters in Economics. Through our partnership with Gain Federal Credit Union, Sarah will also receive an award via the Gaining Ground Scholarship. Jennifer Dunn, 2024 recipient of the “Never Too Late” Scholarship, will be pursuing a Masters in Marriage & Family Therapy

Congratulations to Sarah and Jennifer! We are proud to support your educational journeys and look forward to celebrating your future achievements. A special thank you to our community partners & donors, Gain Federal Credit Union, Enterprise Bank, and PRC Management Company!

2024 BHC & BGC Summer Camp

The Elmwood Summer Camp is back! Our partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank provides an affordable, all-day summer program for children (1st-8th grade) in our resident community.

So far, our campers have gone on field trips to Universal Studios and El Dorado Nature Center, with more educational and fun outings on the way! In addition, our community partners at the Burbank YMCA have allowed us to utilize their aquatic facilities and provide free swimming lessons for beginners.
