2020 Back to School Celebration: Grab & Go

In 2004, The Back to School Celebration was created with the objective of preparing kids from lower income households for the new school year. A coalition of Burbank nonprofit organizations have continued to organize this annual event.

This year, the Burbank Back to School Committee assumed the great task of planning the Back to School Celebration amid the COVID-19 public health crisis. Normally, we host an outdoor resource fair to connect families to related programs & services. Due to social distancing guidelines, we adapted our event to a drive-thru backpack giveaway. Although our event had changed to meet public health & safety guidelines, the need from our community was greater than ever!

On August 8th, The Burbank Back to School Committee hosted the 2020 Back to School Celebration at the Burbank YMCA and we distributed 375 free backpacks during the event. An additional 125 backpacks were given to families who were unable to attend our event. Even without our usual activities and resource fair, we were able to help prepare a total of 500 children for the new school year!

With the support of our community partners, we were able to continue this annual event that so many families rely on. Thank you to all of our donors, partners and volunteers!
